“Thank Bill for writing and sharing these lessons. I really like the idea of downloading and not having another book on my shelf.”
-Fran

“THANK YOU! I'm lovin' it. This is going to be awesome!”
–Nannette

“We changed books last year and there has been an adjustment to line things up. I really liked what I saw. It was worth paying the price. I kept thinking Kudo's to this teacher. If I had ever put together my careers teaching experience, this is what I would like it to look like.”
-Murray

“Thanks again! The kids love this activity!”
-Lindsey

“Hi there. I am using the lessons. It is my first year teaching 8th grade science, and I am having a blast.”
-Mike

“I am loving your lessons and the power point presentations are SO helpful! There are so many that I can do even though I have no supplies or lab materials. I definitely have to credit you for my students' success in science this year. Thank you SO much!!”
-Vicki

“What a great place for those interested in science education! Your resources are so helpful!”
-Jamie

“Bill, Your science lessons look great. They are a real value for so many great ideas and slides!”
Thank you, Erica

“When I came across your lessons I was ELATED!!!! Let me not mention a life saver too because as I am about to begin soon I felt like I was sooooo unprepared but not now!!!! Thanks a trillion!!!!! I’m positive that me and the students will love it.”

NEW! Abe's Makeover

Take the edge off chemistry as we use vinegar and salt to instantly remove the tarnish from an old penny. Then the fun really begins as we notice that there are 3 very cool chemical reactions going on!

Only on video

Radioactive Samples

Learn about the 3 kinds of radioactivity- alpha, beta, gamma- by viewing actual samples of polonium, strontium, and cobalt, and then discussing what each does over time. Lesson Notes

"The Elements" by Tom Lehrer

If you've never heard this, you're missing out. Prove to your students once and for all that chemists do have a sense of humor...at least among themselves. Lesson Notes

Balancing Chemical Equations

Includes 4 problems that students can work through. They start easy so students can see what's going on and build confidence. Lesson Notes

Isotopes & Ions

Confused about isotopes and ions? Let this PowerPoint help straighten you out. Presented in 2 versions-normal and the short version, which your students can do on a blank sheet of copy paper or on the handout provided. Choices abound! Lesson Notes

Difference 1 Proton Makes

This demonstration reinforces what protons are, where they are, and just how important they are by illustrating what happens when 1 little bitty proton is added or removed. Lesson Notes

Interactive Notes-The Atom

In this set of interactive notes students observe: 1.a sugar cube that gives us an idea of how small atoms are, 2.another kind of sugar that sparks, proving electrons exist, 3.an a-maze-ing demo that helps us understand how we know anything about something so small, and 4.bar magnets that provide clues about the other two kinds of particles- protons and neutrons. Dot Diagramming-Understand The Placement Of Protons, Neutrons, And Electrons

Dot diagramming is an important bridge between 2 major chemistry concepts- atomic structure and then how these atoms combine into molecules. This activity feels more like a puzzle than a typical science lesson. Lesson Notes

Counting Atoms-An Investigation Into The Nanoworld Of Atoms

How can you measure something that’s so small that it’s never been seen? In this challenging but fun lesson students will count the number of atoms in a metal cube not with their eyes, but with mathematics. Lesson Notes

Clay Atoms-Taming Our Fear Of The Invisible

Most students are uncomfortable with atoms because they assume that since atoms are small they must be hard to understand. This fun activity will disprove that as students use clay to mold protons, neutrons, and electrons that they’ll combine to make atoms. Lesson Notes

Periodic Pencil Classification-Understanding Chemistry's Cornerstone

Watch as students progressively organize a group of pens and pencils using a scheme they devise themselves. And then spring a big surprise- their table relates to the Periodic Table in many ways! Lesson Notes

Interactive Notes-Physical And Chemical Change

In this set of interactive notes students observe: 1.an egg changing its mind, 2.what happens when you light rocket fuel, 3.an invisible force snuff out a candle, and 4.a who-dunnit mystery that will identify Santa's non-believer. Lesson Notes

About the "Interactive Science Teacher"
My name is Bill Wilkinson (students just call me "Mr. W") and I love teaching science! In the 16 years I've taught one thing has remained constant- ALL students learn better when their their hands and minds work together.

Currently my title is Science Liaison for Vigo County Schools in Terre Haute, Indiana, where I teach daily in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classrooms in several different middle schools.

I am proud to say that every lesson on this site is an original that I really did with real students. Only lessons that achieve a rich balance of natural curiosity, science standards, content, and appeal to all students are good enough for this site.
