Great Questions During 8th Grade Science Lesson Plans
They’re rare hard to find, but they make all the difference in 8th grade science lesson plans. I’m referring to great questions. One great question is powerful enough to carry an entire activity- it gives you something to build around and up to. Or you can leave it with your students to chew on for a homework assignment that wraps on into tomorrow.
My 8th grade science lesson plans include some great questions, but you can come up with more of your own by going through the activity in your mind beforehand.
And don’t forget the importance of good mental preparation before the activity. Plan a series of leading questions that culminate in that one special question that you almost can’t wait to get to. Since great questions seldom pop up out of nowhere, you should invest time in the activity before the activity, as described in my Yellow Sheet. By doing this you’ll give yourself a chance to come up with some great questions of your own.

8th Grade Science Lesson Plans That Use The Gift Of Curiosity
Do you know how lucky you are to be a science teacher? Imagine you woke up tomorrow morning and you suddenly had become an English teacher and had to come up with something for your students to do. Your mind is probably not exploding with exciting things to do. Ok, calm down, you’re a science teacher again. Do you remember what you dreamed of doing when you first decided to become a science teacher? Was it hand out worksheets? Give long lectures? That doesn’t even deserve an answer.
You can use human curiosity to your advantage in your 8th grade science lesson plans, and it can take you anywhere you want to go. Here’s a fun demonstration idea: gift-wrap a box as beautifully as you can with ribbons and bows. Then start class one day by putting the package in front of your classroom and try to teach a normal lesson while attempting to ignore the gift box. Your students will go nuts wondering who it’s for and what’s in it. Mean? Yes. Fun? Absolutely!
Keep this gift box handy for when your 8th grade science lesson plans take a turn and you get questions like “why are we spending so much money on space exploration”? Answer- basic human curiosity. It drives everything we do, and it gets to the root of what science really is- looking around, noticing, and wondering why things are.
8th grade science lesson plans Without Magic
While all of my 8th grade science lesson plans were designed to be purposeful and effective, they still won’t magically teach themselves (but wouldn’t that be nice if they did?). Teaching 8th grade science lesson plans is hard work, and there will never be a substitute for good preparation and your willingness to put your all into it. But the neat thing is that all that preparation will lead to something magical- the ability to connect with 30 students of varying backgrounds and ability.

I hope one thing noticeably missing from my 8th grade science lesson plans are the words “easy” and “simple” (I’m not a fan of exclamation points either!!!!!). Nowadays those two words tend to be overused, and in most cases they exaggerate a claim. If you’ve ever had trouble assembling something that the directions said to just “simply” do, then you understand where I’m coming from.
The other reason I try to avoid the words “easy” and “simple” is that there’s nothing particularly easy and simple about well-done 8th grade science lesson plans. Easy and simple 8th grade science lesson plans amount to giving students a worksheet or pushing play on the video player. Guiding a class of 30 students through a 45 minute journey through a topic in which everyone in the room learns something meaningful is actually pretty hard to do.
The Best Influences On Your 8th Grade Science Lesson Plans
It’s stunning when students realize this, but teachers are real people. When they spot us shopping or driving around town, they may stare in bewilderment because teachers are never supposed to be anywhere but at school teaching and getting ready for 8th grade science lesson plans.
As wrong as that perception is, they’re still right about something- being a teacher of 8th grade science lesson plans carries over into every other part of our lives, just as every other part of our lives affects us as teachers. What books are you reading? Or are you reading anything at all? If you’re not reading at least one challenging non-fiction book a month then you’re not doing the very thing that we as educators stress is so important to our students. If reading a book seems too boring, then you’re reading the wrong things because a good book is hard to put down. And one good book will lead to others. Each book will teach you something valuable, and soon you’ll see growth and improvement in your life.
What Busyness Does To Your 8th grade science lesson plans
Do you remember the magician from Frosty The Snowman? He was busy, busy, busy!! That describes Americans today- always in a hurry trying to accomplish more than we have time for. But things done in a hurry are seldom done well, and that includes the 8th grade science lesson plans we do in our classrooms as well.
Being busy is not in itself a bad thing, and having more 8th grade science lesson plans than we have time for should theoretically result in a better learning environment, since we should be choosing to do the strongest lessons and disregarding the weaker ones; we’ll call this natural selection of lesson plans. But sometimes 8th grade science lesson plans are done just for the sake of doing them, and if most of what we’re teaching our students will soon be forgotten, then what’s the point of even doing it?
My 8th grade science lesson plans take a more balanced approach. They don’t try to go all directions at once, nor is it all fluff and fun. There is terminology and concepts, but my goal is also to develop the creative and practical part of each student’s mind. Each of my 8th grade science lesson plans stays steadily focused on just 1 thing or theme from beginning to end. And they tend to be simple and quiet so that your students can keep a sustained thought and actually have some room left over in their minds to think creatively and to explore.
