Interactive Science | Electromagnets-6 Mini Investigations
| In this lesson students will discover 6 amazing properties of electromagnets with their own hands and eyes. They will assemble, disassemble, and make changes to a working electromagnet, and will learn about them without even needing any prior knowledge. That makes this a great introduction to electromagnetism.
At first, the lesson may look huge and overwhelming. But its format is simple- you and your students will be lead through 6 timed challenges by a PowerPoint. The other nice thing about this lesson is its flexibility. You can compress it into a short 25 minute period, or stretch it out to 45 minutes by including readings from your textbook, more dialogue, longer play time, and time to answer the homework questions.

Teacher Notes
 |
►A strong set of
Teacher Notes (shown left), including:
- 5 pages of details, discussion, and information. Illustrated with images to keep you clear.
- Divided into 4 easy-to-follow sections: Materials per student
(linked to a science supply company), Additionally, Beforehand, and Procedure.
- A teacher/student dialogue, based on actual classroom
discussion, which gives you a truer feel for the lesson.
- A handy 3-column table that summarizes for you each of the 6 "Tasks", expected "Results", and "Comments".
►A one-page
Quick Notes document that outlines the lesson. Use this to see just what the essential elements are, or if you find the regular Teacher Notes too descriptive.
►TWO versions of a
PowerPoint (shown right)
that goes with the student handout. One version is a 17-slide
straightforward presentation. The other includes a one minute
timer that runs automatically during each of the 6 challenges
(more pressure=more fun). Either one will lead you and your
students through the activity with simple instructions, note
cues, and even directions on cleaning up for the next class. (You can tell this lesson has been used in a real classroom, can't you?)
►A
student handout that has
starter statements about each task, which they will complete once they
do them and find out what happens.
►2
pictures you can use any way you like to reinforce concepts.
►There's even a 10 question
true/false quiz we threw in just to make your students even more happy. Use it as a real test, a review, or not at all.

The Best
It’s stunning when students realize this, but teachers are real people. When they spot us shopping or driving around town, they stare in bewilderment because teachers are never supposed to be anywhere but at school.
As wrong as that perception is, they’re still right about something- being a teacher carries over into every other part of our lives, just as every other part of our lives affects us as teachers. What books are you reading? Or are you reading anything at all? If you’re not reading one challenging non-fiction book a month then you’re not doing the very thing that we as educators stress is so important to our students. If reading a book seems too boring, then you’re reading the wrong thing because a good book is hard to put down. If you need a start, check out the book list on our
The Best page. Those will lead to others. Each book will teach you something valuable, and soon you’ll see growth and improvement in your life.
